In the early nineties, Arts & Dier built a large practice on a four-hectare plot in Klijndijk, just north of Emmen. Even back then, the vision was to realise a clinic that contained all possible facilities, including CT scanning, cardiology, etcetera. Several smaller pet clinics in the surrounding area serve as satellite facilities to provide veterinary care in a major part of the north of the Netherlands. For the clinic’s expansion in 2024, Van Keulen Interieurbouw was contracted to create beautiful custom-made furniture – much to the enthusiasm of its users, says associate veterinarian Bert van Ittersum.

Interior of veterinary clinic Arts & Dier combines design and practical usability

“Our vision from 1992 proved to be correct; by the end of the first decade, we were already beginning to outgrow our large practice. In 2023, we had truly reached the limit. Our staff of 70 now provides so many support services that expansion was absolutely necessary. The remodelling and extension have given us additional operating and treatment rooms, offices, a call centre and more. This meant that we required a wide variety of furniture, all of which had to be made to measure. The interior designer suggested by our architect quoted quite a large sum.

Vertrouwen

In the end, you chose Van Keulen. “That’s right. As I was driving to our practice in Frisia, I was stuck behind a large white Van Keulen truck. I decided to give them a call. From the very beginning, our interaction was pleasant. The tour of their facility in Nijverdal that they offered us as part of their tender presentation inspired much trust. The professional production lines and the well organised logistics, combined with an accessible and solution-oriented approach made us feel very good about the partnership. That feeling only got better over the course of our year-long working relationship.”

Perfectly made to measure

Bert continues: “We had quite a few demands. Our prominent building calls for a very specific appearance. At the same time, this is a working organisation where we perform many different activities that require custom-made furniture. Think of height-adjustable desks with a width of over 2.5 metres, glass cabinets that are accessible from two adjoining operating rooms and suspended cabinets that can bear considerable weight, just to give a few examples. Van Keulen was only capable of producing everything we needed in house; they also kept coming up with highly practical solutions and improvements to our initial designs. For example, a wooden counter was made out of plastic with a wood-look print for hygienic reasons.

Solving problems

“At an early stage of the project, our interior designer told us that this company would be able to give us what we wanted. That proved to be absolutely true. For example, when a well-stocked cabinet came off the wall – there are mishaps in any project – the issue was resolved immediately and a brand-new cabinet was delivered on short notice. Another time, when some very specific cabinets from a different supplier had to be installed on the base cabinets built by Van Keulen and they didn’t fit, a professional solution was found on the spot. Now, in November 2024, I can look back on a year of successful and pleasant collaboration. Like myself, our staff and our customers are thrilled with the final result.”
